Murud-Janjira Fort is located in the Raigad district in the Konkan region of Maharashtra state. The name Janjira comes from the Arabic word ‘Jazirah’, which means Island. It is one of the most famous fort in Raigad. It is situated in the small town of Murud in the Raigad district.

Murud Janjira Fort boasts a storied past dating back to the 15th century when it was constructed by the Siddis, an Abyssinian dynasty that ruled over the area. The fort’s strategic location on an island off the coastal village of Murud made it an impregnable stronghold.
Over the centuries, the fort underwent several expansions and renovations, becoming a formidable bastion that thwarted numerous attempts at conquest by various rulers, including the Marathas and the British. Its robust defenses, including massive stone walls and strategically placed cannons, earned it the reputation of being the only fort along the Western coast to remain unconquered.

Many rulers fought for this fort but no one get succeed to conquered this fort. Since then no one has been able to conquer this fort. At that time this fort had 500 canons but today only few of them are exist. Kalal bangadi, Landa kasam, are some of the dangerous weapons of sidi. There are numerous houses are present inside the fort, which was constructed for people. Kalal bangadi was among the most dangerous cannons in India.

How to reach Murud Janjira:

By Road :

Murud Janjira is well connected by road, making it easily accessible from nearby cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nashik. The journey offers picturesque views of the Konkan coastline, dotted with palm-fringed beaches and quint fishing villages.

For those traveling by car, the route from Mumbai to Murud Janjira takes approximately 4-5 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

Alternatively, Maharashtra state transport buses ( MSRTC ) and private buses ply regularly between Mumbai and Murud, providing a convenient and affordable options for travelers.

By Train : 

For those preferring to travel by train, the nearest station to Murud Janjira is Roha railway station. You have to catch the train to Roha. From Roha railway station you can take cab or Auto to Murud. Then you have to take ferry from Rajapuri jetty, which will cost you about Rs.80 per person. 
Otherwise you can take bus to Murud. From Roha railway station about 10-15 min. of a walking distance you will get Roha bus stand. From Roha bus stand you will easily get buses to Murud, which directly drops you to Murud bus stand.

By Air : 

For those who are planning to travel by air, the nearest airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai. It is located at a distance of 150 km away from Murud Janjira. From the airport, travelers can hire taxis or opt for bus services to reach Murud,

The best time to visit Murud Janjira Fort is during the winter months, from November to February, when the weather is pleasant and conductive for exploring the fort and enjoying water activities along the coast.

Additionally, the clear skies during this period provide excellent opportunities for photography enthusiasts, especially during sunrise and sunset.
