Pratapgad Fort

Pratapgad fort is located in Satara district of Maharashtra state. It is situated at a distance of 28 Km away from Poladpur and 24 km from Mahabaleshwar. Mahabaleshwar is one of the most famous hill station in Maharashtra. Situated at an altitude of 3600 ft. above sea level, this fort tempts everyone with its strategical  fortification. Par and Kinesvar are the two town in between this fort is situated.

This fort is one of the most famous and important historic fort in Maharashtra. In 1656 Moropant Trimbak Pingle constructed this fort, under the order of Shri Chhatrapti Shivaji Maharaj.

It was built to protect the banks of the Koyna and Naira Rivers and for the safety of the Kingdom. Reminiscent of the prowess of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, this fort still stands proudly, bearing witness to its history.

This fort is divided into two parts: upper part and lower part. The upper part was built upon the crest of the hill. It is 180 m long and 180 m in wide, forming shape like square. It contains several buildings, including God Mahadev temple. And the lower fort is protected by bastions and towers. It is 320 m long and 110 m in wide. Here you can see the Tulja Bhavani temple built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The battle between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan, one of the historic battle in history, which was fought at the bottom of this fort on 10 Nov.1659. In this battle Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj assassinated Afzal Khan.

How To Reach:

By Road:

There are two ways to reach Pratapgad fort by road. One is via Wai-Mahabaleshwar and another one is via Mahad-Poaladpur. If you are in Mahabaleshwar, you can take bus to Pratapgad fort from Mahabaleshwar bus stand.

By Train:

Satara railway station is the nearest railway station to Pratapgad fort. It is located at a distance of 90 Km from Pratapgad fort. From Satara railway station, about 5-10 min. of driving distance you will get Satara bus stand. From the bus stand you can take a bus to Pratapgad fort. Otherwise you can take a cab to reach Pratapgad fort.

By Air:

Pune airport is nearest airport from Pratapgad fort. Pune airport is located at a distance of 160 K.m. From the airport you can take buses or cab to reach Pratapgad fort. Mumbai airport is the second nearest airport from Pratapgad fort. Mumbai airport is located at a distance of 220 Km from Pratapgad fort.

Best Time To Visit:

There is no set time to visit historical fort. You can visit this fort in any season as you wish. But if you want to make the journey even better, you can come here in the rainy or winter season. Situated in the Sahyadri mountain range, this fort takes a classy look during monsoon. Winter is also best time to visit this fort.
