  Golconda Fort

Golconda Fort is located in the Hyderabad,Telangana state.It is one of the most famous tourist attraction in Hyderabad.It is about 12 km away from Kacheguda railway station.This Fort got its name from Telugu word Golla and Konda which means ‘shepherd’s hill’. In the past Golconda was also known as Mankal.Excellent architectural structure and design tempts everyone with it’s beauty.It has been declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
In 17th century this Fort was famous for it’s market of diamonds.At that time,diamonds and pearls were traded from Arab and African countries.The World famous diamond ‘Kohinoor’ was also found here.Initially the Fort was made of clay but later during the reign of Qutb Shahi dynasty the Fort was built of granite.
This Fort has total 8 grand entrance which has 37 turret with a height of 15 to 20 meters.It is said that there is mysterious tunnel in the palace that runs through the Darbaar hall and runs outwards from the meanest part of the Fort.This tunnel was constructed with a view to exit the Fort in case of emergency.The Fort is built on a 450 feet high hill.

This Fort was first built by the King Kakatiya of Warangal in 1143.Later,Rani Rudra Devi and her heirs rebuilt and expanded the Fort.After some years ,masunari kappa Nayaka defeated the Tughlaq army and captured the Fort.In the middle of 13th century,Masunari Kappa Nayaka gave the Fort to Bahamani sultan.The Bahamani sultans ruled the Fort for many years.Golconda Fort gradually became famous under the Bahamani Sultan. Bahamani sultan sent sultan  Quli Qutub as a governor at Golconda.This Fort remained the capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty untill 1590 when the capital was shifted to Hyderabad. Qutb Shahi dynasty totally renovated and expanded this Fort.

How to reach:

You have to catch the train to Kacheguda railway station.From station about 5 to 10 min. of walking distance you will easily get buses or cab to Golconda Fort.
